Illuminated Art by Stan Olthuis
ILLUMINATED ART BY STAN OLTHUIS
Spanlite collaborated with Canadian artist Stan Olthuis to create illuminated art for two private residential commissions in the Toronto area. The first piece, Matriarch, led to a second commission, The Three Graces, which Spanlite produced as a triptych across three separate Integra units.
PROJECT OVERVIEW
Stan Olthuis first approached Spanlite with Matriarch, a blue artwork for a private residential setting. Following a sampling process for artist approval, Spanlite supplied the complete Integra lightbox and controllers for installation in Canada.
Following the success of Matriarch, Stan commissioned The Three Graces. A poem exploring energy, harmony and seasonal change informed the three artworks, which Spanlite developed as a connected illuminated art installation for another private home.
For The Three Graces, Spanlite reproduced each artwork as a high-quality giclée print on film, adhered the prints to the reverse of the glass, and housed the finished panels within three separate Integra units. This process created a high-quality finish while preserving the detail and colour of Stan’s original images.
Spanlite managed the print production, glass preparation, Integra assembly and shipping from the UK to Canada.
TECHNICAL DETAIL
Stratum Image Glass allows Spanlite to reproduce artwork or graphic imagery as a giclée print on film and adhere it to the reverse of glass. This creates a durable illuminated surface while protecting the printed image and maintaining colour detail.
Each completed glass panel sits within a separate Stratum Integra lightbox  unit, which contains the lighting and support structure in one finished frame. The system incorporates LED Light Sheet with dynamic white LEDs adjustable from 2700K to 6500K.
The client uses a handheld dial to move between warmer and cooler light, changing how the artwork is viewed without altering the artwork itself. In addition, Spanlite powder coated the frames to a client-specified RAL colour to ensure design cohesion with other features.
