Backlit Faux Onyx Wall Panels in Mayfair, London

This project features large-scale backlit faux onyx wall panels installed within a luxury residential development in Mayfair. Spanlite was appointed at an early design stage to deliver illuminated surface elements across apartments, spa and amenity spaces.

PROJECT OVERVIEW

Spanlite supported the design team from concept stage on this luxury residential development in Mayfair. Working alongside Equation Lighting, PLP Architecture and The Office of Thierry W. Despont, we advised on how illuminated surfaces could integrate with high-end natural materials throughout the scheme.

The client had already selected real slabs of Statuario Onyx for kitchen worktops and bathroom floors. In response, our design team arranged for the slabs to be professionally photographed and converted into matched digital images. We then used these images to produce Stratum Image Glass panels, allowing illuminated surfaces to visually align with the real stone used elsewhere.

As the project progressed, Spanlite coordinated manufacture, lighting integration and installation across multiple areas. Over a five-year programme, our dedicated site team delivered each element in sequence, ensuring consistency across private apartments and shared spa facilities.

TECHNICAL DETAILS

Across the apartments, Spanlite produced 38 illuminated kitchen splashback panels using Stratum Image Glass printed with the client’s Statuario Onyx imagery. We backlit each panel using our low-profile LED Light Sheet , specified at 3000K to complement the warm interior finishes.

In selected apartments, we also delivered 16 illuminated bathroom feature panels using a Calacatta Oro digital image. At the same time, we supplied illuminated kitchen soffit panels and four changing-room panels in white diffused glass to support functional lighting within the spa environment.

For the spa feature wall, Spanlite developed a bespoke structural system and applied our own green onyx digital artwork to the image glass panels. Because of the spa conditions, we nano-coated the structure to protect against chemicals released into the environment. In addition, we fabricated and supplied 16 stainless steel mirror surrounds to integrate with mirrors by others.

All glass panels were manufactured as 12mm laminated units (5+5+1.5mm). Throughout the project, Spanlite coordinated manufacture, installed all illuminated surfaces and lighting systems, and commissioned the completed installations on site.
