How it works

Polylite® is a patented LED edge-lighting technology designed for back-lighting Spanlite’s digitally printed glass feature walls, and also for back-lighting graphic displays including super-slim lightboxes.

It consists of an acrylic panel with a bespoke pattern printed on one side. Light shone into the edge of the panel refracts when it hits the pattern, and is sent back out through the front face. The pattern is custom-calibrated for every application to to create an illuminated panel of evenly spread brightness.

To illuminate Polylite® we use strips of LEDs, positioned at either one or two edges of the acrylic. Using just one row of LEDs can evenly backlight a 2.8m tall panel, and by using two rows positioned top and bottom, we can span up to 3.5m in height.

The Polylite® panel sits behind another panel of digitally printed glass. Light from the row of LEDs is distributed through the Polylite® and illuminates the glass. It all sits within a custom-built frame incorporating an aluminium heatsink. The whole system is 60mm deep.

To create even back-lighting, a bespoke pattern is printed on the back of the Polylite® panel, and as light hits the ink it is refracted back through the face. The pattern is calculated using custom software to ensure that the surface illuminates completely evenly.
